Tennessee just added 76 mountain biking routes

Finding a mountain biking route in Tennessee just got a lot easier.

The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development announced Nov. 5 that it added 76 trails to Bike Tennessee, its online cycling route finder. Developed in partnership with the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA), the expansion brings the program’s total to 165 road, gravel and mountain biking routes, with options for beginners and experienced cyclists alike.

Where are the trails?

The routes are spread across 11 mountain biking hubs, with eight in East Tennessee. These include the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club in Knoxville, SORBA Chattanooga, Windrock Bike Park and Ober Gatlinburg Mountain Bike Park.

Middle Tennessee has two hubs: SORBA Middle Tennessee and Upper Cumberland SORBA. The only hub in West Tennessee is Grind City Trails in Memphis.

Four hubs have trails that accommodate adaptive mountain bikes, which are designed for riders with disabilities: SORBA Chattanooga, SORBA Tri-Cities, the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club and Grind City Trails.

How to choose a route

The Bike Tennessee interactive map lets riders explore trails across the state and compare options based on distance, elevation and terrain. Select “Mountain Biking” to see the new additions, then narrow the results by location.

Before heading out, check with the local trail organization or bike park for current conditions, closures and access rules. If you’re using an adaptive mountain bike, confirm that your chosen trail can accommodate it.
